Tawanda is the soften version of the name Towanda due the replacement of the "o" with an "a". Despite that fact that many African American females are named Tawanda, the name is actually Native American. African Americans have thus adopted the name and began to use it more in modern times than Native Americans. The adoption may be due in part to the fact that many freed African American slaves found refuge on friendly Native American reservations post slavery. The name peaked in the 1970s.

A Character in the movie 1991 "Fried Green Tomatoes"
There are 2 theories on the meaning of Towanda from the 1991 movie "Fried Green Tomatoes". The first is that Idgie felt like an outsider and was more comfortable around African Americans. It is said that she may have chosen a more African name to feel as though she were a part of something completely opposite of her family. The other theory which may coexist with the inital one is that it is a word of female empowerment. Evelyn used it for this purpose and called herself "Towanda the Avenger". As for language interpretation, I cannot specifically state what it means.
