Means vivacious and strong-willed, its root is from the slavic name veruscha/verushka.
Do consider that there is a Latin word for a type of wart that is spelled veRRuca, but who uses Latin much anymore? It isn't common to know the Latin for something, and is not likely to come up via school yard teasing!
I am from England and a "Verruca" is a wart you get on the sole of your foot - everyone uses that term. Roald Dahl named a character in "Charlie And The Chocolate Factory" Veruca Salt, because the character was so repulsive. Later a US band named themselves this, not realising what it really meant. In the UK you will see ad for anti-verruca products - one slogan: "Bazooka that verruca!" It won't catch on over here!
- Personal experiences with the name Veruca: | Edit
I just heard about a sweet, little, red-headed girl whose parents had given her this name.. the latin word for wart did come up but only with health professionals. I think it's a beautiful and unique name.

Meaning: vivacious, strong-willed
Possibly derived from slavic name, Veruschca or Verushka (meaning true, honest, faith)
For his book "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," author Roald Dahl supposedly named a female character Veruca Salt after a medication in his medicine cabinet.
A popular alternative rock band in the 1990's, "Veruca Salt" took their name from Roald Dahl's character.
- Famous real-life people named Veruca: | Edit
There are no famous people with this name in the UK. When roald Dahl wrote his book, he was actually making a joke with the girls name. She was a horrible character, spoilt, demanding and unfriendly. A verruca is the name we give a wart on the foot or hand, Australians and New Zealanders also use verruca in this way. So just to warn you, it may be a lovely name for USA ears, but for other English speaking countries if you have this name you will be laughed out the room!
