The Italian name Violante is a result of the Italian basic name Viola, whose pronunciation is "vee-ò-la", meaning 'violet', and the French name Yolant, with the similar meaning of 'violet-colored', both mixed together.
The origin is not sure at all: a part of it might probably come from France, according with the most popular opinion, but it also might be partially German, and in that case it would also mean 'fighter.'Anyway, the final resulting name Violante only belongs to the Italian tradition; it's a quite ancient and precious name, but it never has been very popular. It was pretty common among the Italian royal families until the 1800s, and earlier, from 1200s to 1600s, many princesses and ladies of noble birth were named Violante. The Savoia family may be considered one of the most famous ones.
It is today a very, very rare name, but recently on its way to spread again slowly.- Famous real-life people named Violante: | Edit
