A brother for Liam

Our first sons name is Liam Sebastian. Agreeing on a boy name for #2 has been impossible! We are both extremely picky and whatever I love he doesn’t and visa versa. The only name we both love is Callum nn Cal. My only hang up is that is sounds kinda similar to Liam’s name. What do you think? Is it usable? Callan and Calvin are also options. I just dont love them quite as much. Middle name would probably be Vaughn or Jonas or Alexander.  I’m open to other suggestions. We would prefer a gaelic name but it’s not an absolute requirement.

Congrats!

I think Liam and Callum are fine together; my only concern would be other kids' names. If you stick to Gaelic names, it probably isn't a big deal, but if you go in a different direction it might be. Would you want another -m name? What about possible future daughters?

You should also be totally ready for people to confuse their names once in a while. It happens to all siblings, but especially if names have similar elements.

If none of this concerns you, go with Callum. It's a great name, and you clearly love it.

you could always have a Graham, Malcolm or Tristram to name a few.  For a girl you could get away with a non m ending but some that do are Kim, Tatum,  Miriam, Mariam, Blossom, Storm,

I honestly don’t think we will have more than two, but it’s not completely ruled out. If we have a girl we would for sure go with Fiona. If we name the next boy Callum we would probably stick to gaelic names for #3 (my husband also has an Irish name and our last name is Irish). For a boy we also like Quinn, Desmond, Alastair and Kieran. Callum is my stabd out favorite though. Sticking to a Gaelic name isn’t a huge issue really, agreeing on one is though.

Gaelic names is an awesome and wide open pattern, and if you don't plan on a like 10 kid family, definitely go with Callum. It's a great name and fits very well with Liam. And btw, I looove Fiona!

I don't see any reason you couldn't use Callum! I think it sounds great with Liam. If you are worried about the similar "m" sound at the end of their names, using Cal as a nickname would really eliminate that for you. I also like Calvin and Callan, but I think you should go with what you love the most!

You might consider using Cal as the full name. Liam is a short-form name that has transitioned to a given, and Cal seems equally usable to me.

I’ve considered just Cal but it feels incomplete to me in a way Liam does not.

I agree. I think that a Cal would have to field questions about what his name was short for way more than a Liam would.

Connor is another one with a similar vibe to Liam for me, but without the repeated sounds.

I think Callum is NOT too matchy with Liam.  Similar ending sure, but very different names.  No problem!  Other alternatives I haven't see mentioned yet are Cameron and Callahan.

I love Callahan.  But I don’t think it flows with our H last name  :(

My instinct was to say Liam and Callum are too close. But I don’t feel the same way for say, Dylan and Logan for brothers, and they have as much in common. I actually know sibling pairs with more similar names: the 1st pair I didn’t notice until their mom pointed it out (think Kelly and Molly), the second took me years to notice (think Annie and Jenny) — and then only because I was actively thinking about it.

Plus, they have totally different stresses (I’d say Liam has more emphasis on the “-əm” and Callum has more emphasis on “Cal.”)

ETA: Unless your last name starts with “Han-” I don’t think Callahan would sound too bad, but you’re the best judge of that. Ultimately, I think you should just go with what you love best.

Thank you for the thoughtful response! Infact, all of you have been very helpful.

And our Last name does start with Han- (long a though).
