A sister for Reuben

My husband and I easy agreed on a boy’s name— Reuben (Ben). It has special meaning to us and isn’t too common, and we like the more accessible nickname Ben.

However, girl names are a struggle. There is no standout. Our favorites so far: Miranda (Mira), Beatrice (Bea), Vivienne (Viv) and Rosemary (Rosy).

Any ideas?

I like all of your choices, but it sounds like you're having a harder time getting excited about them because they're chosen mainly on style rather than a deeper connection to the name. I think you'll be happier overall if you can find a similar connection. Can you share a little bit about how Reuben is special? You don't have to mention specifics, just general circumstances--like "it's a family name" or "it's from our favorite book" or "it's related to our first date". That might help us help you brainstorm other names or associations.

You’re exactly right! What made Reuben special to us is that it’s connected to artists and literature. What also makes it a standout is that it feels timeless and not trendy.

Miranda reminds me of The Tempest, other characters in fiction, and the writer Miranda July, which is how it became a favorite for me. Unfortunately there are also negative associations, like Sex and the City, and the YouTuber Miranda Sings.

Beatrice is also from Shakespeare and other literature.
