Camilla-popularity

Camilla (Kah-mill-ah) is my #1 name for baby girl.  Never had met one below the age of 30.  Just heard there was one at the local camp (age 3).

Wondering if you have met any Camillas (not Camila (Kah-meal-ah)) below the age of 5.  Really only interested in poularity and not whether you like it or not.

Don't want to use if it is the next big name on the horizon.  For example my God daughter is Lila and now I personally know 6 Lilas below the age of 5.

Thanks in advance for your input!

Hmm, I would have said that you should have nothing to worry about, but looking at Name Voyager makes me think otherwise. It jumps from out of the top 1000 before the '90s, and is currently at 458, so while the jump is steep, mid-400s isn't that bad. I think the "ill" sound will keep it from being a mega hit, although I can see it gaining more popularity, if that makes any sense.

I personally haven't met any Camillas, and I know you said you weren't intested, but I do like it :)

Thanks for the insight!

Glad some people like it!  Did not mean to sound rude, but I am so sick of hearing from people how they can't stand Camilla Parker-Bowles.  :)

I like the name a lot, always have. I have no opinion on Parker-Bowles.

I've never met a Camilla of any age.

I know of one adult Camilla and no young babies or children with the name. It's certainly not popular in my parts (outside of the US).  I actually have always thought it is a lovely name. I also like the related Camille.

However, it is strongly associated with Parker-Bowles. I know when I was pregnant my mum said she didn't care what I called my daughter but it better not be Camilla as she hates Camilla Parker-Bowles.  I thought it was a tad over-reactive of my mum but I think many people do associate the name with her. Which is a shame because it's a great name, and there isn't really anything wrong with Camilla Parker-Bowles at any rate.

I know of one, who is an infant.

It's a name I see on polls a fair amount, but I don't know how much it's really being used (yet).

You might want to also look up the popularity of Camille.

I can see it becoming popular with the popularity of vintage names in general, and the popularity of sounds in it, like Cami, Mila, Milly etc....

I do think of Parker-Bowles, but her star seems quite a bit brighter these days.

The collective memory is so short that I doubt very many young moms would remember the days she was looked down upon.

I love the name.

Will it become the next big thing? I don't know....but I guess I wouldn't let the potential rise of a relatively unique name keep me from using my first choice.

I've never met a Camilla, though I have known a couple of Camille's (both adults).  My instinct tells me Camille would be more likely to rise in popularity, but I'd be surprised if either name became super popular anytime soon.

Thank you everyone!  I don't care if people don't like Camilla Parker Bowles either!  :)

I guess it is just so scary to pull the trigger on a name.  I hate when there are like four kids with the same name in class.  I did not have this problem with my boys' names.  Funny!

Popular names are so much less common than when we were kids...there just aren't that many kids with the #1 names anymore!  It's like 1 kid per 100. Of course there are clusters but among the 60 kids in my daughter's grade, there was only one Jacob, even though it was #1 for their birth year.  The only repeated name was Mia (there were two).  NONE of the top 5 girl names are represented.   So even if you pick the most popular name, there's a good chance your child will NEVER have another kid with the same name in their class...and if you pick a less popular name, there's always the possibility that a random fluke will put two Camillas together. Unlikely, but it could happen!    I worried a lot about it when I picked my first daughter's name but now that I've seen the classroom name-landscape I am SO much less concerned about it when I'm picking the name of #2.

And PS, I like Camilla. I like Camille too. In the UK people would strongly react to the name Camilla (a bit like they react to Hillary here in the US, I'd guess...she's a polarizing figure), but Camille doesn't provoke the same reaction if that is important to you.  Camille sounds a little more sophisticated, whereas Camilla is a little softer/prettier.  And if you like Camille, you might also like Simone.  I know a toddler Simone but I don't know any Camilles or Camillas under the age of 30.

hwar-

I totally agree.  Common names are not as much the norm these days, but my example of Lila scares me.  I seroiusly know 3 alone at my boys' preschool and 3 elsewhere.  I remember my goddaughter's mother was so sad when she realized that there were so many Lilas after she thought it was such an original name. Of course we have countless Isabellas, Harpers, and Sophias at school too.

But yes, I think I may be obsessing a bit too much!

Love Camille too, but Camilla goes better with our 2 syllable last name.

Camilla is not on the same trajectory as Lila. All the L and Lil names seem to be very trendy now so you are much more likely to see clusters of them than a Camilla cluster.  I think it would be unlikely a young Camilla would come across many other Camillas!

Totally true.

Out here, every 3rd little girl is called Sophie, but somehow, there have yet to be two in any of my boys' classes.

On the other hand, one year there were 3 Mayas (Mya, Maia, Maya).

The duplicates I can think of have been Ethan, Haley (multiple spellings), and Caitlin (multiple spellings).

No dueling Emilys or Emmas!

I don't think the Parker-Bowles association is much of an issue in the US, especially among those not old enough to remember Diana.

I think the name Chamilla is charming. Long past naming stage of life. Grandparenting days now.
Anyway, I -always felt sorry for Camilla and Charles. They've loved each other forever, and should have been allowed to marry when they were young, but the Royals forbade it for any number of reasons. See what they have wrought. I'm glad they are together at last. Perhaps she isn't movie star beautiful, but she's got class. Never responded in an ugly fashion to her detractors, and has matured into a handsome woman.
Thumbs up for this name.

Hm, hard to say if it will rise or not, check the SSA stats and similar names. I know of 1 Camilla and she's 30.

I'm probably dating myself, but Camilla is Gonzo's pet chicken to me.

I actually think it's a pretty name, but could not pull the trigger on this one for myself between that and Parker-Bowles.

I know one Camilla - she is in her mid-30s and has always gone by the nn Cami.  It's a beautiful name, and I suspect her own cohort won't have any of the Parker-Bowles associations at all, so I say go for it!

Thanks everyone for your help.  I feel fairly confident that Camilla will not get overly popular.  Cheers!
