Can’t decide- boy name

Baby #2 due in a month. Big brother is Jack, family name, which we love but feel badly that he is always one of multiple Jacks at libraries and playgrounds so we’ve tried to avoid other popular names that I love like Oliver and Charlie. We’ve narrowed it down to 2 names but we’ve been stuck on these 2 names for the past four months unable to pick. Help! Leo or Emmett?

I prefer Emmett--it's one I would consider if my own name weren't Emily. I like Leo but it feels a little incomplete to me. Leopold, Leonard, Leonid, etc. would be good formal names to yield nn Leo.

I like Leo a lot, but when paired with Jack all I can think about is Leo DiCaprio in Titanic.

Of your picks, Charlie is my favorite by far.  In 12 years of teaching elementary school music, I've only known two, so I don't think of it as being particularly popular.  I'll like it even better if it's a nickname for Charles.

It's possible that all your choices are either already popular or poised to become popular. Oliver, Leo, and Emmett are all riding popularity waves right now, and haven't peaked yet. Only Charles isn't in a peak, but it's still a solid choice of a name, about as popular nationally as Jack (although Jack + Jackson is about twice as popular than Charles).

If possible, try to see what people are naming babies in your neighborhood/town. They're going to be the names you're competing with on the playground, and in your son's classes, and so the greatest potential for overlap are there.

I would pick Emmett - I've actually never known one. Jack, Charlie, Oliver and Leo - I know lots of little (and bigger) boys with these names. But, really, any of them would be a fine name and I don't think you should worry too much about the popularity if you really love the name.

I really like both names, but to my ear Leo matches better with Jack (probably because they both have that snappy nickname vibe) so I'd go for that. I do think Emmett works just fine as well though. Have you tried the technique of "narrowing up"? That's where you both list everything you love about each name (and no negative points); if one name ends up with a much longer/stronger list then you know which one to go for.

Honestly if you're this close and still unable to pick then maybe just take both names to the hospital with you and see if you feel like one of them is just him when he arrives. Alternatively if Jack is old enough to do so you could let him choose; it would be a sweet way to get him involved with the new baby.

I agree with Kater-ater here... Jack and Leo conjures Titanic for me! However, I don't think that is a deal-breaker, as kids his age are VERY unlikely to make that connection. I like both names, so I don't think you can honestly go wrong with one or the other, but I will say that Leo seems to be more up and coming; if you are concerned about popularity, that may be something to consider.

I like both, but I think I would probably give the nod to Leo here.  I like the sound of Jack and Leo.
