Isla! I love Isla but afraid everyone will say IS - la instead of EYE-la.
This was my reply but I forgot to sign in first
Yes! At storytime I saw a girl's nametag for "Iyla," which totally ruined the name for me- I only like it spelled Isla!
I just met an adorable little girl with this name. Her father very patiently explained how it was pronounced and spelled. I doubt I will forget it.
lovely!
I've always loved the name Peacable, but every time I share it with a friend they mock me... it feels very Puritan-y to me and I love its message, and that's it's (very) unusual. I guess I should add that it's a boy's name. That's where I usually lose people.
.
I have two.
Olympia is one I love, but then again...it has scary nickname possibilities ("Limpy") and I dislike the close association with the Olympic games.
Oswald is one I love but cannot use because of the association with Lee Harvey Oswald.
Beatrix.
It's a little out there, although I think it would be accepted by most people. But I just cannot pair it with my last name without setting up my little girl for a lifetime of horribly inappropriate jokes.
that was me. [sorry about the anonymous post, I thought I was still logged in.]
Crispin! If I have a curly haired boy, that'd be his name. I worry that everyone will make snack food jokes about it though.
I love Crispin! :)
Philippa! But I'm worried that Americans would mis-emphasize the syllables.
I also really love Linus, but I think it's too strongly associated with Peanuts.
I knoW a Linus who is three. Peanuts is everyone's first guess but they got it from the movie Sabrina as in Linus Laraby. Now that he there there is really no peanut association. HiS brothers names make a good sib set.
I love the name Arwen but I'm afraid it's too nerdy to give my baby at Lord of the Rings name! I'm nerdy enough as it is!
I've always loved the name Benedict, but I just can't get over the association with Benedict Arnold. Plus there's now the pope with that name and we aren't Roman Catholic.
We have a Benedict! I was afraid to use it too but now I love it! We call him Ben and people are always surprised and impressed when they find out he's not Benjamin. It's Catholic but also Shakespearean!!
Athena. It's not an uncommon name in Greece, but to American ears it sounds like a bit much. Not every girl could pull it off.
Mercy. I love the sound, the meaning and I think there's even one in my family tree. I've mentioned the name to others and apparently most people associate it with hospitals. Plus Madonna has used it for one of her kids.
Ooo...I've always loved Mercy. The cousin from the Witch of Blackbird Pond was named Mercy, and I always thought she was worth immulating.
I work with a teacher who pointed out how much he loved my daughter's name because in french it means "mercy." Her name is Clemence, it is a modern form of Clementine.
I love Felix, but it has too strong an association with the cat.
I love Fitzwilliam (yeah, from Fitzwilliam Darcy). It has the same nickname possibilities as William but its a little more interesting. However, my daughter is Jane so I think it's a bit much to have another Austen tribute name in our house!
I love the name Zuzu, but am afraid it sounds too much like a nickname.
.
Zuzu's petals!
I love Eulalia!!
I would love to use Cuauhtemoc. However, the name is just a little too overburdened with Aztec meaning, and unwieldy for Americans. It has been used quite successfully in Mexico, however.
I love the name Hero for a baby girl. My DH will NEVER agree to that.
I love Verity, but I'm afraid it's too uncommon in the US and people won't understand what I'm saying.
I love that name but I think people might think it's Vera-Dee or something like that. I would still use it, though.
Definitely Samara. My older daughter really wanted to name our younger daughter "Sammy" and we loved the option of Samara for the nickname, but also for the meaning, but ended up chickening out because of the horror movie (The Ring) character. Now I wish we had at least given it to my daughter as a middle name.
I have two - Aloysius and Percival. I love the whimsy of the former, and I've loved the latter and its nickname Percy since my childhood in England. With a four syllable, Italian surname though, either seems far too outlandish. I'm also not sure there'd be a nickname I'd like for Aloysius. I just love its whimsy!
I guess if I had to pick the one I love the most but can't bring myself to choose it'd be Ryder. Far too many names fight with our last name/would set the child up as an easy playground target!
I love the name Adelaide, but I'm afraid it sounds too old-fashioned.
Disagree! I think this is the type of name that sounds new and fresh. Addie is a lovely nickname.
There are quite a few word-type names that I admire, but wouldn't use myself (unless I somehow found them as surnames in our family tree). Unusual month names like September or December; Winter; West; Meridian; Vesper; Saffron; Linnet; Indigo (all for girls).
I actually know a Meridian. She's about 20 years old. She's definitely encountered her share of confusion regarding her name, but I think she does like it.
I would love to use "November" for a girl, but no way would my husband go for it (even in the middle!) My brother and grandfather are both named August, and we have so many family members born in November (including my mom, grandma, sister, and husband!) that it would be a nice little tribute to everyone!
Love November!
Siobhan - an Irish name pronouced, roughly, shih-VAWN. I have more than thirty Irish cousins, and Siobhan is one of my favorites, in both her person and her name.
The sound is lovely, but the Irish spelling is a real hurdle, and I can't bring myself to alter it.
Rafi - but it is the name of my cousin who died tragically and unexpectedly a few years ago. His brother wants to use the name, and I don't want to step on toes.
Dara. In Khmer (Cambodian language), it's a great boy's name, but in English it seems people think of it as feminine.
I love Roxy or Darcy for a girl, but doubt I would ever pull the trigger!
I really like the name Eleanor because it is a name that isn't too childish when the girl gets older but feel that it is too old sounding for a little girl.
My daughter's name is Eleanor and we call her Elle or Ellie for short. We get so many compliments on it!
I like the name Judas, which is actually just a variant of the Jewish name Judah, but living in the Bible Belt, I think it would ruffle some feathers. It would be like naming your son Benedict Arnold or Rosenberg. I chose a similar sounding name without negative connotations for my son, instead. :)
My son's name is Judah and I frequently get the reaction "Judas??" No, Judah. Different Biblical character!
Indigo - Love the sound of the name, and nickname potential (Indi), but can't do it for two reasons: 1) My husband thinks it would only work for a boy, but I think it sounds like a girl's name due to the Indigo Girls association; 2) We have a Violet, Indigo and Violet would be much too matchy for a sibset!
I love the name Declan, but I know the rednecks around here would say "De Clan" and it would drive me crazy! No offense to any rednecks, just saying!
Kaliope :-)
Everyone we talk to hates the name but my husband and I love it.
