Evangeline?

I've really been liking the name Evangeline recently, but I've seen a ton of different pronunciations of the name. How would you pronounce it?

I don't like any of the pronunciations better than the next, so it's really up to whichever is the most common.

Thanks!

My daughter is Eh-Van-jeh-leen. We get about 50-50 for -leen and -line.

The one I wasn't expecting (and we get about 10% of the time) is when they start it with:

EEV-angel-_____

Or when we get asked if we made it up.

My 7.5 year old has a middle name already, and this doesn't address the OP's question.

I say ev-an-je-leen, which is the pronunciation I mostly hear irl. I could see some people preferring ev-an-je-line, but I've only ever heard my mom say ev-an-je-lynn. She says that's how they said it in school when studying the poem by Longfellow, so maybe the older generations would default to that? (My mom is 67.)

I'm not sure if this helps or hurts, but I stumbled across this website yesterday, which gives a variety of ways to pronounce a name.  https://www.pronouncenames.com/search?name=evangeline

For me, I can't deal with ambiguous pronunciation names.  I've always been frustrated to be a long-E, Mee-gan.  But, to each their own.  If it doesn't bother you, it isn't a problem.

FWIW, I pronounce it E-vang-eh-leen, but could be persuaded to pronounce it differently if asked.

I default to Evange-LEEN, even though I am strongly default -LINE pronunciation for Emmeline, Caroline, Madeline, etc.  Evangline is really the only exception!

I think that having a zen attitude of, "[preferred pronunciation] is how we say her name, but [the other] is also a reasonable pronunciation and not one we correct aggressively if it's not someone regularly in our lives" is probably the way to enjoy using this name on a child. I think the -line names in general have enough pronunciation variation that I imagine you'd have to be okay with people regularly getting it wrong.

Exactly.

My 7 year old will gently correct someone when it comes to her name, and when in private will laugh and say, "I got another Evange-LINE today! I wonder if I'll ever meet an Evange-LINE?"

My default is ev-ange-uh-leen. I have a hard time remembering the -line pronunciation for Evangeline but could do it if reminded.
