Impressions of Camila

What do you think of the name "Camila"? I have never met one in my area of the U.S. I see that it is quite popular though...#23 in 2017. (I would pronounce this Cah-mee-la with potential nn Mila (mee-la) What is your impression of this name? Do you like it? What about the spelling Kamila? Does this make it prettier or not?

I pronounce it Cam- ill -a (the mil part rhymes with pill or bill).

I think it is lovely and underused.  Go for it!

I vastly prefer the C spelling.

With two Ls I'd pronounce it like the Prince of Wales' wife (second syllable rhymes with hill), but with one L I would assume the pronunciation you prefer. I like it; I'm a little bit surprised it's so popular. I wonder if it's more popular in states with a larger Spanish-speaking population?

AGreed both on the Camilla/Camila distinction in pronunciations - it's totally not an issue. The Camilas I have known were indeed Latina. I suspect that's behind why Camila has risen so sharply in the last generation while Camilla, which was formerly the more popular version of the name, has only made modest increases in the past decade. I think that the one-l spelling looks more classic and doesn't invite is it two Ls (ells) or is it the spanish letter Ll (ey-yay). I would guess that this is a general impact on English double-L letters in the US usage in the past generation, as the Spanish speaking population rises. The fact that Lluvia is rising as a name tells me that people are generally clued into the fact that tortilla and quesadilla don't rhyme with caterpillar even if you do drop the r.

I think it's a lovely name, and I vastly prefer it with the C, which is also the more common spelling. If you're as curious as I was, here are the relative usages of this name family in the past year:

I love and adore the name Camila.  I have an impossible time taking Camilla at all seriously because to me she is Gonzo the Great's chicken girlfriend on the Muppets.  But then, I'm a Muppets freak.

You might also consider Camille (French) and Carmela (Italian).
