Is this name to weird?

My husband and I both love the name Dirk for our baby boy we are expecting in October. Its a very german name and so is our last name (pfeffer). I love unusual names but is this one too out there? Need some honest opinions.  Thanks!

I personally love Dirk. There was a very handsome classic movie actor called Dirk Bogarde. I would go for it!

Not out there at all. I grew up with a Dirk, so it seems normal to me.

Not too weird. You should be aware that the primary association for many people is still Dirk Diggler, porn star. Apparently there's a pro-basketball player now by that name, as well, so perhaps that association will overtake Boogie Nights, at least with Texans and sports fans (I have to confess I'd never heard of him until I did a google search).

To be honest, Dirk Pfeffer would probably make me giggle a little bit because it's kind of aggressively Germanic and manly. That's not a bad thing though! It's memorable.

I like Dirk, and I think it's fine with your surname! The Dirk I know uses his middle name as a call name instead, because he was in a generation where it was often misheard as Derek, but I don't think that would be so much a problem any more. As someone who likes more adventurous names, I might pair it with a more standard, blending in middle name to open up some options for nickname choices, but I think it's a fine name!

I remember the character on the old arcade game, Dragon's Lair, was named Dirk. So, I have fond associations with the name that have nothing to do with x-rated entertainment.

If you like the sound of Dirk but are afraid it is "too out there," have you considered Kirk? It's also a strong name, though has lots of associations with Star Trek.

Or Kurt, which is a very German name and has the same sharp feeling as Dirk.

I think Dirk is a good retro name and D is a cute nickname if you want to soften it when he is a baby. :)
