Just For Fun: Baby Names, Say & Think

The idea is to give your first reaction to various baby names, (what you say vs what you think) then suggest a new name. For the next person. For example, with the name John:

Say: A great classic!

think: Solid choice, bit boring

name: Atticus

Who wants to play, starting with Atticus?

Say: What a lovely name! I love the "To Kill a Mockingbird" connection.

Think: It's nice-sounding, and the literary connection is fun, but everyone who uses it is trying to be special and it isn't anymore.

Say: Wow, that is really a really unique name!

Think: I love how it makes me think of the word mirror, but I wonder if it is a real name or made up? I like it.

my favorite name is coven saleen for a girl

November 27, 2014 11:22 AM

Since you posted in the "say and think" game thread....

Say: That's very ...interesting. What is it that you like about it?

Think: um. Coven, like a group of witches, and saleen, like a mashup of saloon and saline: a place where ugly old women go to drink salt water?

(Sorry if that's not what you wanted to hear, and I really don't mean to offend, but I truly think that coven is a noun that's particularly unsuitable for use as a name.)

October 28, 2016 1:05 PM

Say: Milo is such a fun name! It sounds so playful!

Think: I always hated The Phantom Tollbooth.

Next Name: Cinnamon (girl)

16
November 7, 2016 12:06 PM

Say: That's so unique!

Think: I hope she doesn't end up hating her name... There aren't even really any good nickname options...

Next name: Filomena

17
November 8, 2016 5:25 PM

Say: That's such a cool, pretty name!

Think: Isn't it usually Philomena with a Ph? Filomena sounds like filament.

Next Name: Danica (girl)

18
November 9, 2016 4:31 AM

Say: Nice name, I like the flow.

Think: Not quite my style, but like similar sounding...

Next name: Agatha

19
November 9, 2016 3:14 PM

Say: That's such a classic name!

Think: I like Agatha, but I think it'll get a lot of playground teasing. The nickname "Aggie" is darling though.

Next Name: Landry (girl)

20
November 9, 2016 11:19 PM

Say: I love how trendy and boyish it is.

Think: It's cool, but it sounds and looks way too much like laundry.

New Name: Meadow

21
November 10, 2016 11:22 AM

Fun fact: Landry is in the top 1000 girls names (albeit low). I don't expect it to catch on though.

Say: That's such a fun, hippieish name!

Think: As far as hippie names go, it's not the worst, I mean, everyone's going to know how to spell it at least. It's kind of like Cinnamon though, I hope she likes it because there's not really any good nicknames for it.

Next Name: Brock (boy)

22
November 10, 2016 11:29 AM

Say: what a cutie you are, little Brock!

Think: are they aware that they named their child "badger"?

Next: Millicent

23
November 10, 2016 1:26 PM

Let's move back to this side, shall we? It's getting kind of cramped.

Say: Is she named for a grandmother/great-aunt? Are you going to call her Millie?

Think: It's cute, beats Mildred. Seems like the one of the next revival names that all of a sudden everyone starts liking again though (think Penelope, Mabel, and Hazel). I bet she'll probably have a couple of other Millicents in her class.

Next Name: Asia (girl)

24
November 12, 2016 4:01 PM

Say: How cute, it is unique but over the top
Think: I feel like it is only a name for a contintent

Next Name: Moxie

25
November 12, 2016 5:25 PM

Say: Moxie's such a fun name! It's so energetic!

Think: Moxie is a soft drink. It's like naming your kid Pepsi.

Next Name: Roy (boy)

26
November 12, 2016 6:56 PM

Say: It's so short and sweet! It makes me think of royalty.

Think: it kind of sounds like an old man's name. I do like to see old people names on babies, but other people will probably think it's weird. I hope that doesn't cause problems for him.

Next Name: Ariana

27
November 12, 2016 9:47 PM

Say: That's so trendy!

Think: It's too trendy. Ariana is one of those names that's going to be so strongly linked with her generation that everyone's going to be able to guess when she was born just based on the name.

Next name: Randi (girl)

28
November 13, 2016 12:08 AM

Randi

Say: How sweet! Is it short for anything?

Think: I really hope it's short for Miranda, because that's such a lovely, underused name. But in and of itself... it feels a bit dated to me.

New Name: Thea

29
November 22, 2016 10:20 PM

Say: That's so precious! How darling!

Think: I like Thea, certainly more than names with the same feel like "Mia" or "Ava", but I feel like people are going to pronounce it "thee", or "the A". I also get the sense it might get really, really, popular soon, and because I can't really think of any nicknames for it unless she likes her middle name she's going to be Thea S. or whatever her whole life.

Next Name: Alfie (boy)

30
November 23, 2016 1:16 AM

Alfie

Say: What a charming, handsome name!

Think: Trying way too hard to be cute and trendy.

Next: Sloane (girl)

31
November 23, 2016 8:48 PM

Say: How fun and trendy!

Think: It's definitely cute, but I don't feel like it's really a name, I don't know why.

Next name: In honor of the new late-season hurricane, Otto (boy)

32
November 24, 2016 9:00 PM

Name: Otto

Say: How nice! Such a classic name!

Think:  That is WAY too close to Ottoman - both the furniture piece AND the Empire... Not a fan.

New Name: Irina

33
January 8, 2017 3:26 PM

Say: Ooh, how unique!

Think: It's a fun take on Irene, and I've always been a fan of Russian names*, but it's a tiny bit close to "arena".

* I know it's a bunch of languages' version of Irene, but I associate it the most with Russia.

Next name: Winter (girl)

34
January 22, 2017 1:57 PM

Say: How cute, short and uncommon but easy to say.
Think: I like it. I wonder if she was born in the Winter, if she was it seems sorta like a cop-out. If she was born in the summer than... how irconic.

Next Name: Darby

35
January 23, 2017 12:44 AM

I don't know if Darby's for a boy or a girl, so I'll do both:

Boy, Say: That's so spunky!

Think: It sounds like Arby's.

Girl, Say: I love how it sounds both boyish yet feminine.

Think: It doesn't sound like a name at all.

Next Name: Coco (girl, not a nickname for anything)

36
January 23, 2017 3:56 PM

Say: Like Coco Chanel? That's adorable!

Think: I don't know that it'll grow with her very well. She'll always sound like a child.

Next name: Independance (Girl)

37
February 10, 2017 11:46 AM

Say: How individual! Are you going to call her Indy for short?

Think: Oh dear God they misspelled independence. That said, it would be cute if she's a 4th of July baby, and Indy's a cute nickname.

Next Name: Wren (b)

38
February 10, 2017 5:50 PM

Wren (b)

Say: I love it!

Think: I love it, but I would only ever use this name on a girl. I know it's used as a masculine name, but it just strikes me as so cute for a girl. Maybe because of Even Stevens on Disney Channel back in the day... ?

Next: Arthur (b)

39
February 10, 2017 6:25 PM

Funny, I've always thought of Wren more as a boy's name. I think I knew a boy once named Wren.

Say: What a classic name! Is he named for a relative?

Think: It's not terrible, the King Arthur association is awesome, but it's kind of stuffy. I also just can't see it on anyone who's not British. It's such a British name.

Next name: London (g)

40
February 11, 2017 1:52 PM

(not playing the game, just commenting on saltwatertaffy's comment):  Are you sure it wasn't Ren? It's a fairly common nickname for Lawrence. Although I suppose that could be spelled Wren as well, I just haven't encountered it as such.

41
February 11, 2017 2:31 PM

I'm pretty sure the female character on the show was Ren (short for Renee or something), but that's just the sound association I have with the name.

There's a male Wren character on Pretty Little Liars.

42
February 20, 2017 9:09 AM

I've heard Wren for boys and girls, but I've never heard Ren on anyone.

So, without further ado, Next Name: London (g)

43
February 26, 2017 3:21 PM

London
Say: What a nice name, seems like it is unique but classic
Think: Always felt this name was somewhat prentenious

Next Name: Greta

44
March 12, 2017 9:15 PM

Say: Oooh, like Greta Garbo? I love her!

Think: I actually like this one, although it's a little stuffy. I like the Golden Age of Hollywood connection, it's a good classic that's popular (it's in the 500's) but not too popular, and a little more new-sounding than G r e t c h e n. (sorry that name triggered the spam filter for some reason)

Next Name: Fawn (girl)

45
March 12, 2017 9:39 PM

(I have moderator superpowers, so I can't test it, but I believe any occurence of the letters "etc" in that order will trigger the idiotic spam filter. This means it chokes on the names Gretchen and Fletcher.)

Say: Fawn, like Fawn Bluefield in the Sharing Knife series? Oh, you've never read Lois McMaster Bujold? She's wonderful, and I love everything she's ever written, but SK is not her most beloved series. If you like SF, try Shards of Honor as a starting point. If you're more into fantasy, try The Curse of Chalion.

Think: gah, I should stop babbling like this, it's just a name, and obviously Bujold isn't why they chose it....

Next name: Lewis. (I met a toddler with this name yesterday.)

46
March 20, 2017 3:00 PM

Say: Oh, how cute and classic!

Think: Is it pronounced Lew-iss or Lew-ee? I know this spelling is usually Lew-iss but I don't want to accidentally say the wrong pronunciation to the parents! That would be embarassing.

Next Name: Rosabelle (g)
