Linus and Melvin

We happily find ourselves in need of another boy name!

So far, my husband has suggested Linus (his favorite since before our first) and Melvin, which I am not totally against and is actually a family name.  Our other three have family names, but our male family names seem to have a lot of Bernards and Freds and Richards (which has a common nickname that is terribly unfortunate with our last name) - none of which I like. I like German names, my husband likes unpopular names.

Siblings are J__ K__ ("K__"), K__, and M__ ("M_").

Last name is ___.

I would love any ideas you have to share.  I have an old list, but they all feel wrong; starting fresh here.

Thank you!

Congrats!

I personally have always thought that family names, unless you absolutely love them, should be middle names, not first. Middle names are used much less, but still honor a famiy member. For me Linus has a strong connection with Peanuts show with Charlie Brown. Maybe that isn't big where you live, but I also feel the fact the the word "lie" is in it makes it feel like I wouldn't want to name my child something that insinuates deceit. That is probably overthinking it on my part though.

Melvin is a nice name, but feels dated to me, and doesn't have the regal and royal sound of the rest of the sib-set.

I would like to offer some suggestions. (Sorry if its too many :)

German and unpopular--Linus seems to fit the bill

Here are some other choices (not all German): Caspar, Otto, Rudolph, Bertrand, Clement, Horace, Emil, Edmund, Clifford, Leander, Cecil, Armand, Hugh, Florian, Felix, Gilbert, Rupert, Leopold, Cormac

Congratulations!

Max if you don't mind sharing an initial with M__. Actually, realised J__ goes by K__ so shares an initial with K__. K__, K__, M__ and Max go well together unless you plan on having more children. Ditto Melvin would give you the 2ks and 2ms set!

I just saw "...Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown," so Linus has one particularly strong association.

Melvin is the uptight, Percy Weasley-esque character of the "Trucktown" books (and now a TV show that has none of the quality of the book).

I agree with PPs that your brood has a regal air to their names and you should continue that. I like Edmund,

Melvin of the Trucktown books is a big hero in our house! I could see how he might not be every child's favorite character (though he's the favorite of one of my children), but "Melvin Might" is very endearing.

I thought of Trucktown for Melvin long before I thougth of the Peanuts for Linus, but I know a little Linus and here it has entered the hipster-cool list of names. Melvin is I think a step further afield in terms of being out-of-step with current styles, but you know what? After repeated exposure (I have read the Trucktown books most days of the past two years), Melvin seems very ready to be used again. I think it's a name that would get some raised eyebrows initially, but would quickly grow on people.

Also, thanks for the heads-up about the TV series (both its existence and its failing to capture the charm of the books).

How about we strip out the names of your kids and your surname?

Hi! I actually had someone track me down and identify me through these posts. I have five other posts in particular that I need to delete for privacy reasons, because my kids names are unique when put together. Can you help me with this? Should l list the other post names and dates here, or send them privately? Thank you.

I can see how that would be creepy! Send an email to bnwmod@gmail.com and we'll take care of it for you.

Does this level of masking work for you? We prefer to keep what we can of threads, since other folks put in time and effort crafting their replies.

I agree that Melvin doesn’t seem to fit as well with the others. Linus is ok to me. I love the suggestion of Edmund!

oops just realized this is old.
