Luke, Owen, or Gavin?

Hi folks!

Would love your input on names for our baby boy, due in March.  Our last name is G@ll@nt, which we and all of our friends and family pronounce guh-LANT; but at the doctor's office we'll sometime hear GALL-unt (think knight in shining armour).

Our top three are Luke, Owen, and Gavin.

Luke - probably my favourite out of the three as a stand alone name, but I find it sounds a bit choppy with our last name (hard K followed by hard G).  It's also probably the most popular of the three and we do know another baby with this name in our neighbourhood.

Owen - the one that my husband is favouring.  I find it flows better with our last name, but to me it sounds a little too serious somehow?

Gavin - I like as a stand alone name, and I don't think I mind it with our last name once the emphasis is on the second syllable; but Gavin GALL-unt is too much!

The other thing is that if we were to have a second boy, I don't think I'd do Owen and Gavin as a sib set as the endings as the same.

Would really appreciate your thoughts and feedback!! :)

Owen is by far my favorite. I think it can be serious and adorable at the same time.

I find Luke is be strictly a nickname for Lucas, and it is really popular right now, and I don't much like the sound of Gavin with your last name.

I adore the name Owen, and I do think it's the best with your ln.

I agree that Luke is a bit choppy with your ln, although if you just love it, I don't think it's a deal breaker.

I think Gavin with your ln is a bit much. It sounds a bit like a children's storybook character-maybe because it reminds me of Goofus and G@llant from the kids' Highlights magazines? The ones you always read at the dentist when you were a kid?

All three are objectively fine name. hth!

If you wouldn't do Owen with Gavin, I'd eliminate one of them now -- and for me, as much as I like Owen, it would be Owen -- because Luke & Owen makes me think of the Wilson brothers.  Now, I like the Wilsons, but not enough to name my kids the same....

Good point I hadn't thought of that..!

I think any are fine. If you are concerned about the flow of Luke, you could perhaps use Lucas. I wouldn't worry about the sib-set right now--don't throw out a name you love because it doesn't "go" with one of the others--because there is really no guarantee at all that you will like the same names next time around.

On an aside, I always thought Felicia Gallant (pronounced the way you do) was a brilliant fictional name--she was a soap opera character who was a romance novelist, and that was her pen name. So of course that makes me like Felix for you :).

I like Luke, but I can see what you mean about flow.  Perhaps Luca or Lucas instead?

I also like Owen and I don't find it sounds too serious.

I'm not a fan of alliteration in general, so Gavin wouldn't be my favorite for you anyway.  But the specific combination of Gavin G@ll@nt strikes me as just too much.  It seems very comic-book characeterish.

I wonder if you'd like Evan?  It seems similar to both Owen & Gavin.  Doesn't have the problems of Gavin and perhaps is doesn't strike you as too serious sounding.

Just a note:  Owen/Owain/Yvain and Gavin/Gawain are both knights of the Round Table.  This may or may not be a concern or a plus.  I am afraid I would have a giggle if I heard either name paired with your surname when it is mispronounced as "gallant"--not of course, when it is pronounced properly.

I would avoid Gavin with your surname but love Luke and Owen.  My pick with your surname would be Owen. Luke is my favourite stand alone but we are expecting a boy next week and have decided on a different name that sounds better with our surname.

Love the name Owen (we have 3 boys and I think I tried getting hubby to cave each time, but he didn't. ;)) but never got to use it.

Luke is ok too.

Gavin...with a G last name would probably be too much. We have a daughter with the name Bria and our last name starts with a B...took a lot of convincing hubby that it was ok to use BB 'because she will probably get married someday and her name will change' (yep, pulled those words out along with pregnancy hormone tears). Boys are a little tougher to give the same letters to...they will have that name forever...
