Name change for older child

Hi,

I'm only 15 (not pregnant), and haven't really enjoyed my name for as long as I remember. I won't do anything about this until I'm at least 17 with consent, 18 without, and have thought over and over about it, but I would really like to change my name. I'm here because I would like some suggestions.

I haven't looked all that much, but names such as Blue, Jasey, Andy, and Joedie appeal to me.

The reason I want to change my name is because I haven't had the best life, and when I'm old enough, I want to up and leave everything behind, start a new life. I also want it changed because 1) My dad picked it out (he's been in jail his entire life), and 2) My mom agreed to it because it's in the Bible (she's shoved religion down my throat since I was little).

Let me tell you a little about me. My legal name has been Sarah Joy Phelps since I was born. I'm a Taurus, born May 1st, 2000. I love reading, I'm OBSESSED with music, blue is my favorite color, I HATE the cold, I've moved around my whole life, and am a very outgoing, quirky person. I have a "been there, done that, what else is new" attitude, and am very wanderlust. I get bored and begin losing patience and sanity if I stay put for too long. I crave change, I don't do well without it. I'm a natural blonde with brown dyed hair, blue-green eyes, freckles, I'm 5'5 and have a pale complexion. I'm very, very sarcastic, and can be a little brat most of the time, won't deny that. I have 4 sisters, two brothers, a dad in jail, and a mom who can't stay in one place for long (she's where I got it from.) I'm planning on dropping out and getting my GED when I turn 16, and then travel the country, and hopefully the rest of the world, with my two best, Naya and Alex.

I can't think of much else to say, so I'll just stop here, and you can ask questions if you'd like.

Thank you for reading, and I hope you can suggest some good names!

Some nicknames you could use if you don't ditch your name entirely:
Sadie (traditionally a nickname for Sarah), Sarge (for Sar-J), JoJo (for Joy, though it would typically be used with Josephine), Josie (another Josephine nickname that could come frome Joy-S).

I'd suggest against Andy because it is a common boys nickname, though you might like Andrea or Alexandra. Joedie will make people wonder if you were named for your grandmother Judy (most common in 1945s), though I do personally like Judith. Blue is an interesting choice, but I don't think it is very name-y,  I'd personally chose a form of blue, like Aqua.  JC or Jasey or Jacie could work well for you.

Mariposa is Spanish for butterfly, which I think is an image similar to what you are trying to convey, of leaving the cocoon and traveling away.  It is almost unheard of as a name, but I think would work very well.

I think choosing a name to change to can be a very hard process -- finding something that will suit you and your personality.  What do you like about the names you've listed?  I assume Blue because it's your favorite color, but what about the others?

Joedie makes me think of my aunt's name, Jodie, and she is certainly the free spirit of her siblings.  What about Josey or Josie?  Or since you love reading, are there characters in books that appeal to you -- not necessarily their names, but characteristics or aspects of them that you might like to reflect in a name?

Given that you crave change, it might be worth considering Weatherly's suggestion of using a nickname until you find something that feels right - whether that's for six months, or for several years - so you don't have the legal hassle and cost of changing your name several times over. Most people's tastes change a lot in their late teens and early 20s, especially if they are travelling the world, experiencing different cultures and meeting lots of new people, as you plan to do. Your future travels sound like the perfect source of inspiration for your new name.

Meanwhile, Josie and Sadie are fun, breezy nicknames, and Mariposa was another great suggestion (plus it has several possible nicknames in case you continue to crave name changes!). Jodie could even be a nickname from Joy.
