Need Help Naming Little Brother To Elias and Nathaniel!

Hi All! I'm expecting my third baby boy in about three weeks -- a little brother to Elias and Nathaniel (nn Nate) -- and we still haven't settled on a name.

We tend to like classic names that are not too popular, and that can travel well outside the US (we have a multicultural family, and have spent some time abroad pre-kids). Although we are not religious, our boys' names have saintly/biblical roots, so we don't mind looking there for inspiration. Here are our current top contenders:

Cyrus
Felix
Gabriel
Gideon
Jonah/Jonas
Julian
Leo
Orion
Samuel
Theo

How do you think these work with our older boys' names? Are there any other names that we should be considering?

Names we feel we can't use as a first name, because they've already been "taken" by family or close friends:

Alexander
Benjamin
Daniel
Lucas/Luke
Nicolas

Thanks much!

Congrats on #3!

From your list, I like Gabriel, Julian, and Samuel best for you- these read as quintessential classics IMO. I think Gabriel hits all the spots you are looking for, as it could definitely travel well, as it appears in many different cultures/religions.  I think the outliers here would be Orion and Felix- to ME, these do not read as classics, especially Orion. Gideon, Cyrus, and Jonah/Jonas are personally NMS, but I don't have any issue with them and think they could fit well with your other kids' names. I like Leo and Theo, but to me they feel very trendy. I do think Leo would travel well outside of the US, though, so that criteria definitely works.

Agreed, Gabriel, Julian, and Samuel are winners. I also think Jonas fits into the travels-well/classic/Biblical vibe of your other boys.

Both of your current boys have 'el' in their names.  One at the beginning, one at the end.  Felix has it in the middle, which is fun, but subtle.

For this reason, I like the 'el' names on your list: Felix, Gabriel, Samuel, (Daniel).

Maybe: Eliot, Levi (Le, not el)

You have such good taste in names!

I like Cyrus, Gabriel, Jonas and Samuel - but they double up on the same ending as your other boys - dont know if that is a problem

Gideon, Felix and Jonah go well

others

Reuben, Jonathan, Joshua, Tobiah, Zachary, Josiah, Malachi, Simeon, Timothy, Isaiah, Ezra, Jared, Jeremy, Micah, Isaac, Jude, Simon

I love both Elias and Nate/Nathaniel, great names! Of your list I like Theo, Felix and Leo best (in that order). Other suggestions you may like: Leon (I think this fits better with the older boy's names than Leo does, and it has the bonus of being less popular but just as international), Jude, Arlo, Sebastian (this is maybe more popular than you would like, but I feel it fits perfectly with your 'names we can't use' list and meets your other criteria).

Great choices! And congrats on 3 boys.

I echo the same concern about Gabriel & Samuel sharing an "el" ending with Nathaniel.

Of your other choices, my favorites are Jonas, Gideon & Julian.

Other choices with the classical/Biblical vibe that i love:

Timothy, Isaac, Isaiah

Great list!

I'd take out Orion, because it sounds too much like Elias. Cyrus is also very close.

Samuel is close in sound to Nathaniel, and Gabriel repeats the ending (not sure if that bothers you or not).

My favorites on your list are Julian, Jonah, Theo, Leo, Felix, and Gideon.

You might also like:

Silas

Leon

Tristan

Dorian

Lucian (too close to Lucas/Luke?)

Patrick

Raphael (also repeats the ending of Nathaniel)

Oscar

Russell

Griffin

Dexter

Max

Ezra

Jude

Matteo

Toby

This post caught my eye since I have three sons named Nathanael, Gideon, and Silas (very similar sound to Elias)! We have received many compliments on Gideon's name and find that it manages to be unusual and familiar at the same time. Of your top contenders the only names I would possibly eliminate would be Cyrus since it sounds so close to Elias and Orion since it seems to be a bit of a style outlier.  Good luck choosing a name for this new little man and enjoy all the fun and chaos that comes with three boys!
