Serena Williams's daughter

Serena Williams has announced the name of her daughter with Alexis Kerry Ohanian: "Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr."

The Jr. is an interesting choice, since daughter and father share first and last names, and I don't think I've seen a daughter be her father's Jr. I can't decide if it's sweet that he was happy to have his daughter be his junior or signals that they wanted a boy and gave their daughter the name anyway, despite being a girl. It works that he had a unisex name!

Wow! When I first looked at this, I did a double-take; I all of a sudden thought that Serena was in a same-sex relationship. I've certainly never heard of a father/daughter junior, but I think it's really cute myself. I suppose we'll have to see how annoying it will get bureaucratically, and how much Alexis, Jr. will like it growing up.

Strictly Alexis Olympia cannot be the junior of Alexis Kerry because the names are not identical, but people do as they please in America where there are no naming laws. The junior notwithstanding, Alexis Olympia is a fine name, and Alexis Kerry would also have been a fine name for a daughter (Alexis Kerry the Younger would be the appropriate style).

Maybe she could be Alexis Ohanian fille? Père and fils got some traction in the media for describing the presidents George H.W. and George W. Bush, since they weren't quite a senior and junior.

I also have to say, I can't help but wonder whether Alexis fille will like her middle name if she turns out to be bookish or otherwise not athletically inclined. Your mother is arguably the greatest tennis player who ever lived, AND you're named after the Olympic games—in which, by the way, said mother has won four gold medals? Talk about pressure! (OK, maybe she was named after Olympia Dukakis or the region in Greece, but it doesn't look that way.)

Although, come to think of it, maybe this was their way of getting Serena in there? It is clearly a nod in her direction, in the middle of a name that is otherwise all dad. Naming after Mom's accomplishments, rather than directly after her. Maybe the next little one can be Serena Reddita Williams :).

Serena Reddita Williams is an inspired choice!

It is certainly plausible that Olympia is after the Olympic Games, but why wouldn't they use a name that is tennis-exclusive rather than one that represents every sport imaginable (and then some)? I mean, clearly they couldn't name her Alexis Australian-Open Ohanian or Alexis Grand-Slam Ohanian, but Alexis Wimbeldon Ohanian is certainly namey enough, if not lacking in subtelty. (Regardless, I do think that Olympia is a pretty name and I quite like its soft girliness next to Alexis.)

It will be interesting to see if they eventually have a boy if they find a way to name him after his mom... Perhaps William/Williams or something a bit sound-alike, like Sorren?
