Sister for Libby

Hi Everyone,

I haven't posted much before but I need ideas and suggestions for a baby girl. Her sister's name: Elizabeth nn Libby.

Any ideas welcome. I like more traditional/classic preferably with a nice nickname. Also it needs to match her sister's name!

Thanks!

Victoria is a classic name with lots of good nicknames. (Vicki, Tori)

Margaret is another one with tons of nicknames. (Meg, Maggie )

Eleanor can get you to Ellie or Nell, but maybe that's too close to Elizabeth?

Of the names others have suggested, I quite like:

Margaret (Maggie, Maisie)

Josephine (Josie)

Susannah (may I add the nickname Sukey for your consideration?)

Would you prefer to stay away from another nn that ends in an -ie sound?

To go with Elizabeth:

Catherine/Katherine  (C/Kate, C/Katie, Kitty, Rina, C/Kat, C/Kathy)

Margaret (Meg, Maggie, Maisie, Daisy, Madge, Peggy, Greta, Margo, Marnie)

Josephine (Jo, Josie, Joss, Phina, Fifi, Posey, JoJo, Poppy)

Abigail (Abby, Gail)

Rebecca (Becky, Becca, Reba)

Caroline (Carrie, Caddie, Callie, Lina, Caro, Carly, Cara, Linny)

Charlotte (Charlie, Lottie, Carrie, Carly, Lotta)

Olivia (Olive, Livie, Liv, Liddy)

Amelia (Amy, Lia, Mia, Mel, Mimi, Millie, Meli)

Evangeline (Evie, Eva, Eve, Angie, Vangie, Lina)

Annabelle/Annabel (Anna, Belle, Bella, Nell, Nellie)

Genevieve (Eve, Gen, Genny, Eva, Evie, Vivi, Ginny, Genna)

Sarah (Sally, Sadie)

Victoria (Vicky, Tori, Toria, Vivi)

My personal favorites with Elizabeth would be Catherine/Katherine, Amelia, and Margaret. Lots of nicknames from any of those, and they all go well. I especially adore the idea of Libby and Maisie or Libby and Mia.

My favorite nickname for Mary is Molly, but you have Mae/May, Mamie, Mimi, Polly, Mitzi also.

According to this wikipedia article, here are some additional nn for Mary- Minnie, Mo, Romey, Moyra, Maura, Marla, Ria, and Marnie.

You could also get away with using some of the Margaret nns, although I know the names aren't related, the names share enough of the same letters that it's feasible to steal them (they also share the Molly/May/Mamie nns). So that would expand your options to Maisie, Meg, Madge, and Midge. Here's the entry for Margaret as well.

You could also get creative with nns based on both first and middle names. For instance, Mary Catherine could be Mickie or Marina, Mary Louise would also give you Maisie or Marilou. Mary Penelope could give you Mopsy or Mellie, etc. etc.

Mopsy?

Guest, if you are the same "Guest" who keeps posting nasty comments without adding to the discussion, either register and stop hiding under anonymity, or leave.

Yes, I suggested Mopsy. The OP asked for a nickname, and I was illustrating how a parent could get creative using traditional names. For a four year-old little girl, yes, Mopsy is an adorable nickname. Am I suggesting she go by it her entire adult life? Of course not. I have, however, heard equally, if not sillier nicknames in my time. In a familial setting, children regularly get called all kind of ridiculous things. At least Mopsy is not only derived from the name I supplied, but also is a nice literary tie-in..

So if you want to actually help the OP name her daughter, give alternate suggestions to mine. If your taste is so immaculate, show me how bad mine is by offering some inspired nicknames. Go on. I dare you.

Well said, ilikemints. I mentioned in a different thread that my son is sometimes called "Guggy" although it has nothing to do with his given name. Meanwhile, we pronounce all four syllables of our daughter's name, since we chose a name for which I dislike the most obvious nickname and none of my alternatives has stuck. You never know what will feel right to a family, but it is nice to be prepared with some sweet-sounding nicknames.

Nicknames can come and go, and they are a fascinating glimpse of personality and values. My grandmother always hated her name "Elneth" and when they were dating, my grandfather nicknamed her "Toni." She was called that during the 50+ years they were married and for the rest of her life.

I *think* it's traditionally a nn for Margaret, but I personally adore the name Maisy, and I think it would be darling with sister's name.
