Vintage name for our 3rd boy

We are expecting our 3rd boy this summer. We ran out of favorites naming the first 3 kids and I'm starting to feel overwhelmed because I don't like anything (except for girls names Esme and Ayelet that I can't use ;)

Our kids:
Delia
August
Everett

Our lastname is Johnson.  So obviously we like vintage names that are a bit uncommon, but not weird either...and needs to "go" with the other 3 names.

So far, my husband is voting for Axel.  It's a family name. I think it's too weird and cumbersome.

My list of maybes include: Flynn, Beck, Ezra, Cael, Silas, Wynn, Ren, Porter. I also don't like names that end in -en or -on sounds, like Dylan.

Thanks!

Oh, heavens, I love your names so far.  My vote from your list would be Silas, without a doubt.  I love it, and think it goes beautifully with your other kids.  Axel is interesting, and maybe a boy would love to have something that sounds like such a tough-guy name, but to me it does sound like a little much.  I would like it on someone clearly Scandinavian (and I mean like a recent immigrant, not generations ago), but otherwise I tend to associate it with names more like Diesel or Harley than Anders or Bjorn.   Since it's a family name, it could work, but I would be hesitant.

From the rest of your list, Flynn and Beck sound a bit more trendy to me (Flynn because of all the sound-alike Finns, Beck, well, I'm not sure).  Wynn and Ren read a bit more feminine/unisex.  Cael and Porter I like but don't love (Cael=kale, Porter makes me think "one who carries things," or the type of beer (yum), or possibly portly).  I think Ezra is a very nice choice, but don't adore it the way I do Silas.

Other ideas... Oliver, Reed, Graham, Frasier, Leander, Leo, Isaiah, Asa, Amos, Elijah....

I think of your choices that Silas flows the best with your LN and matches your current children well. I agree that Wynn sounds female and would encourage that as a choice for a future girl. I will also second Oliver, Reed, Wyatt. I'd put Axel in a mn spot if it is important to you.

I also like Silas.  What do you think about Sawyer?

Great names, I'd agree that Axel would be way out of place.  Also agree with others on nixing Ren, Wynn, and Porter for the reasons stated.

I do really like Flynn and Cael.  I would want to use Flynn for a boy if it worked with my last name (but also have the connection that it's my mom's maiden name).  I love the sound of Cael and think it works great with the siblings.

Silas is also a great option, Ezra is okay (not sure why I don't really love it).  The one knock on Silas is that it does seem to be getting very popular, if that's a concern (especially with your last name).  I know 2 young Silas's.

A few other suggestions: Henry (maybe too popular), Cole, Casper, Jasper (maybe too trendy although I don't see it as that!), Francis (Fran or Frankie), Oscar, Theodore (Theo), Archie (on its own or short for Archer, Archibald), Walter (Whit is a cute nn), Ernest, Louis, Leo, Frederick (Freddie), Warren.

My favorite from your list is probably Porter.  Silas is also very nice but the others all seem just a little bit off style-wise.  Axel is one of those names that is nice in theory, but I just can't escape the Axel Rose association.

All of your names were once on my lists at various times, so perhaps you'd like some of the others I considered.  What do you think of Sterling, Merritt, Fletcher, Samuel, Marshall, Harris and Miles?

I also know you said you don't like names ending in the en/on sound-but your example of Dylan makes me wonder if this is more of a problem for names that are trendier/less classic than August and Everett.  If that is the case, maybe you'd consider something along the lines of Donovan, Solomon or Rowan?

OMG - thanks for all the thougtful replies!

We live in a very Scandanavian-heavy part of the country, so Axel wouldn't be all that out-of-the ordinary. There are tons of kids with similar names (Sven, Britta, Signe, Torbin, Soren, etc) but not any Axels that I've seen ;)

I realized that Flynn is the lead character in Tangled, which is why my daughter probably suggested it. So yeah, that's off the table.

I like the name Beck, but I can't get over the initials BJ.

Porter and Sawyer (and Axel) just seem like too over-the-top compared to the sib's names, even though I don't hate them, KWIM?

I am also LOL about the suggestion of Sterling. My husband LOVES this name, but I can't stop thinking it would be an awesome porn name:  Sterling Johnson.  I guess I have a dirty mind.

Donovan, Solomon or Rowan, Samuel, Miles, Harris, Archer, Theo, Oscar, Theo, Oliver, Reed, Graham - are all the names of our kid's close friends or family.

See what I mean about me being picky?  :)

LOL about Sterling Johnson, I probably would not have suggested it if I had realized what your last name was!  Great dirty minds think alike.  Perhaps it'd be better off in the middle slot.

Porter seems very classic to me. Cole Porter is who I think of first so I associate the name with Fred & Ginger era musicals and WWII era musical groups like the Andrew Sisters.  I think it sounds very dashing with your sons' names.

I have very mixed feelings about Sawyer.  I want to think of Mark Twain, but the Lost character has taken a lot of that appeal away for me.  It's unfortunate when an established name gets a sudden pop culture boost like that.  I never even watched the show, but it's still what I think of first.

Rhys, Frederick, Rupert, Monroe, Phillip, Randolph, Nathaniel, Douglas?

I love your kids names :)

Hands down Silas is a winner for me, especially with your surname. I confess that August and Silas are top of my boy list and Cordelia is top of my girl list so I do have similar taste to you.

Axel has been suggested to me a few times (I have an Astrid) and I like it but don't love it. From your comments it seems like it wouldn't be out of place in your area but it doesn't quite work with the other kids names (not that that should be a deal breaker).

Flynn/Finn are very very trendy arond my parts so I would probably avoid them. I also don't love Porter or Cael. Wynn is definitely female to me. I've known 2 female Wynns. Ren also reads female to me.

Beck I don't love with the other kids. Ezra is OK if you don't love Silas.

Sterling was a good suggestion but not with your surname.

Wyatt works well with similar sounds to the other kids. I don't think it's too close to Everett.

How about:

Rafferty

Jonty

Fletcher

Sutton

Caspian

Sinclair

Grady

Stafford

Ambrose

Roarke

Have you or the hubby thought of Ansel?  It's a bit softer than Axel, yet definitely not feminine.  Although not popular, it does have history and a connection with the famous landscape photographer.  I think it fits in nicely with your other children.

Of the names you listed, I'm agreeing with the majority.  I like Silas best.

Also, although I like Porter, I've only ever met one, and she was a girl.

I hadn't thought of Ansel, but I wonder if it sounds too much like August.  We call him Gus nearly all the time, so it's not a huge issue. I do really like it too, and it's similar to Axel, without being too weird or  too popular!

I second Ansel. It doesn't sound too similar to August at all and if your August goes by Gus, all the better!

Personally I like Oliver or Samuel.  Those names seem to go with your other children's names, as well as your last name much better.

Asa comes to mind. I love Asa but can't ever use it due to the Spanish speakers in my family (it would be Ass-a with the Spanish accent). Victor? Arthur? Warren? Ward?

I would not do Porter or Sawyer with your LN. They just don't sound good to me. I like the suggestions of Ambrose and Fletcher. Also, if Axel would not see mout of place in your area then it works. It just doesn't seem to match the others as well as Silas or some of the others do.

Our taste is very similar. I love your names. I'm also having a boythis summer and our last name causes problems too. It's w00d. Sawyer was out for us from the start. As was palmer which i really liked. I was going to suggest sterling - it was on our list at one point - but I see the issue there! I also like foster and Elliot, but Elliot is similar to your oldest. I agree that axel doesn't flow well with the others. I like Wynn and porter. Also Walt, winfield, Hayes, Marshall.

I like Axel just fine, but I don't think it fits well with the other names.

Faves from your list: Flynn, Porter.

Other suggestions: Forest, Roscoe, Owen, Hiram, Armand, Emmett, Rupert.

I think if Axel is important to your husband then it goes nicely as a mn with Silas, which is my pick from your original list. I also like the suggestion of Ansel though and do't think it would be too close to August.

(Reposting, not logged in, since this doesn't seem to have gotten through when I submitted last week - hope it's still useful.)

Congratulations! Of your original list, Silas would get my vote without any hesitation, both in its own right and in combination with your older kids' names.

None of the others jump out at me like Silas does; some are appealing but don't seem to fit as well with your other kids' names (not that that's necessarily critical). Beck seems short for Beckett (which doesn't work as well with brother Everett) and just "short" or abrupt in general next to the other names, though I do really like the "stream/brook" meaning. Cael just doesn't grab me and seems likely to require spelling clarification, though I don't mind the vegetable association. Ezra sounds too close Everett to my taste, with the shared Eh- beginning and ending syllable starting with r. Flynn will likely become trendy with several recent pop culture associations (I think Laura W. wrote about this in a recent blog post) and similarity to the many popular Finn-names; that may not bother you, but your other names are all more classic. Ren reminds me of "Ren and Stimpy" and seems a very different style than the others, though I'm not sure what style exactly ... the cartoon dog is really my only association with the name. Porter sounds very "heavy" (just the sounds or also the connotation of "man carrying things?"), especially with your surname. Wynn could work, but there's also the girls' name Wynne; neither are common, but without a special connection to Wynn I'd probably shy away from the potential confusion. Axel is not my favorite either; something about the sound just feels aggressive to me, at least next to the more "refined" sound of your other boys' names. I think Ansel was an inspired suggestion and not too close to August. And of course Alexander fits, as it does almost anywhere ...

A few other suggestions, a mix of common and less so, long and short, but trying to avoid repeats: Abraham/Abram/Bram, Alasdair/Alistair, Alec, Basil, Callum, Cashell, Cecil, Clark, Clive, Cormac, Desmond, Dominic, Emil, Enzo, Eric, Fergus, Isaac, Ives, Kyle, Lucas/Luke, Lyle, Malcolm (Mac), Nicholas, Otto, Paul, Patrick, Roger, Rory, Russell, Simon, Sullivan, Thaddeus, Tucker, Vincent, Wesley, William, Winston ... (I also thought of Giles, Hugh, Jules, Magnus, Rufus, Soren, and Vaughn ... and then thought of your surname. But maybe they'll spark a good idea with someone else.)

Hope this helps!

- kalmia

Great names!

I'm not crazy about Silas, not sure why, but I agree with everyone that it is a good match with your other children in terms of style! I love Porter, I think its perfectly vintage while still not being unusual. Perfect match with August and Everett!

I also want to second the suggestion of Graham. I think this name is awesome and often overlooked!

I would avoid Axel. You are right that it does not fit.
