Which name goes with our surname?

Hello everyone! Our family name is Montgomery. Which name sounds better or looks better with it for a girl?

1. Caroline

2. Carolina

3. Elizabeth

4. Julia

5. Natalie

thanks all

I think they all go well with your surname.  The only one I think that is a little two many syllables is Carolina,  but still is nice and pretty

I think for writing things down - Julia - its pretty and goes well

or Eliza would be nice too or Juliet

I think they all sound fine with your last name. The one thing I will say is that Elizabeth Montgomery was an actress (she was Samantha on Bewitched). That was my immediate association, and it may be for others, as well. I would avoid that one honestly, since you have other great choices.

Do you have a favorite out of these? Or anything holding you back from committing to one of them?

This was my first thought, too. When I saw the surname, I actually thought "that should go with a lot of names--well, so long as it's not Elizabeth" and then saw that Elizabeth was on the list. She's not a super-contemporary reference, so may not be an issue...but on the other hand, I was googling her yesterday in connection with Salem, Massachusetts (that's probably partially why the reference came so readily to mind).

I read "Elizabeth Montgomery" and thought, "Elizabeth Montgomery... That's someone famous. Is she an author? No, that's Lucy Maud. Who the heck is Elizabeth Montgomery?"Then I saw the answer in the comments and said, "RIGHT! Of course!"

Does Nick at Night still exist? Or is Bewitched available on any streaming sites? Lots of shows that aren't contemporary are still around in syndication and familiar to young people. (Anyone who hasn't seen The Golden Girls recently should watch it!)

I don't see any conflicts with your last name.

It's a great list!  I'm leaning Caroline right now, but might choose another one if you asked me on a different day!  I'm not real fond of Natalie, but the others are all beautiful options.

Natalie was the outlier for me too-- I think it feels too singsong with the double ee sounds.

I would go with one of the vowel ending names since your family name starts with a consonant and is so consanant-heavy in general. Carolina Montgomery is gorgeous!

Thanks everyone for your replies! My favourite out of these was Elizabeth though...But most of you had an association with the actress:( It's a good or bad thing, I don't really know...

Bewitched is a fairly harmless U.S. sitcom from the 1960s and what the actress is most known for. I haven't seen an episode in repeats since I was a kid, but I don't watch much TV. I imagine kids today won't have any idea who she is.

I don't think it is an issue, unless perhaps if you live in Salem, MA (the city has a statue of her, which caused some controversy).

Thank you sso much, mk. I am so much relieved!

My children know who she is as we have re-runs here all the time

All great names though

Great list! I think Carolina doesn't flow as nicely as Caroline, and Natalie seems stylistically different from the rest of the list. I also think of Bewitched in relation to Elizabeth Montgomery, which for me is a wonderful connection! I loved watching that show on Nick at Night--fun and sweet! But I think my favorite is Julia. Would definitely be at the top of my own list if my best friend hadn't had dibs on it since we were about 9 years old!

Thanks for the replies. Even if we choose Elizabeth, we can use Eliza as a nn and the association won't be so obvious I think

My top picks from this list are Caroline and Elizabeth to go with your surname. Runner up would be Julia.

I have seen Bewitched but had no idea about the actress' name until this thread. I don't think that association is worth bothering about if Elizabeth is the name you like. It's not like naming her Beyoncé or something, few people will notice and likely none will say anything.

I think Julia flows very well

I forgot to mention that we're also thinking about Vanessa...I wonder what you ladies think about it.

February 27, 2018 6:11 AM

I saw a five year old Vanessa last year and was surprised at how nice and fresh it sounded (in the abstract, I would have said Vanessa sounded dated). Her sisters and cousins all had more conventional names that are popular now, and I've forgotten all their names, but Vanessa stood out in a good way. I love Nessa for a nickname.

Wow, I also haven't thought of Vanessa in ages but I like it, too!

Thanks for all your help! Another question - isn't Julia Montgomery another famous actress? Or she is not as famous as Elizabeth Montgomery?

March 1, 2018 4:22 AM

I didnt even know who she was,  so nowhere near famous
