Origin of the name Adonis:
From Greek and Roman mythology, Adonis was a son of Cinyras, the king of Cyprus, and his daughter Myrrha. After Myrrha was transformed into a tree, Adonis was given to Persephone (Proserpina) to care for. It was decreed that he would spend four months in the underworld with Persephone, four months with Aphrodite (Venus), and four wherever he chose. He was killed by a wild boar while hunting and was transformed into the anemone flower by Aphrodite. His cult was widespread and the ceremonial festival of Adonia was held yearly after the harvest, in honor of his death and rebirth.
