1)Father used to gaze out at it across the beaches from the Island of Bute. This is our son's name.

2)I am American and my husband is Scottish and our second son is named Arran. I always loved the biblical Aaron, but then when my husband mentioned the island, I loved that as well! It is especially meaningful as I have found out that Aryn is an Arabic version of the name and my mother's family has an Islamic background and has always given Arabic names. So, our son has a Scottish name like the beautiful Scottish island, a version of an Arabic name, and, as another spelling of the biblical Aaron, it means "exalted one"....

Some people refer to the island Arran as "scotland in miniature" because each part of the island looks like a different section of Scotland....a beautiful place well worth seeing!

1)Possibly Brythonic for "high place". The profile of the north Arran hills as seen from the Ayrshire coast is a well-known sight referred to as the "Sleeping Warrior" due to its resemblance to a resting human figure.

2)Yes, the sleeping warrior on Arran - a great site! When my son Arran was very small, we called him our little "sleeping warrior".
