Although Bentley is currently the name of a car, the name is Old English in origin. It means "a clearing covered with bent grass" and is thus a place name. Other than being a car name, it is also the name of places in England and a last name.

Our son is named Bentley and we call him Ben, but everybody assumes his name is Benjamin. Daycare staff, coworkers, friends, and even family and church members who know that Ben is short for Bentley because it is a family name will still, on occasion, call him Benjamin.

My son is names Bentley. I never thought of the car when we named him, but everyone else seems to. It was a surname before it was a car, but some people tend to think it's snooty. But just as many people think it's cute.
