Comments and insights on the name Elgin: | Edit

The removal of the "Elgin marbles" from the Parthenon was controversial even at the time. The Romantic poet Lord Byron expressed his opposition in his bestselling epic poem "Childe Harold's Pilgrimage." His contemporary John Keats also wrote two sonnets about seeing the sculptures. Dispute continues between the Greek government and the British Museum about ownership of these artifacts. I suppose the sort of people literary enough to associate Elgin with marbles would be too gentile to tease an Elgin about "losing his marbles" ... or would the pun be irresistible?
