Comments and insights on the name Fay: | Edit

My paternal grandfather's first and middle names were Fay Arthur. My father was Richard Arthur, and I am William Fay. I have been told that the name is Gaelic for "faith". Apparently it was a more common name in past generations (Fay Vincent, the former commissioner of major league baseball comes to mind), but growing up in the late '60s and '70s, I can't say that it was an easy name for an athletic, thoroughly heterosexual boy to live with. Despite some annoying teasing during my eight years at an all-boys prep school, I have grown to be proud of my rare middle name, and today I wear a ring given to my grandfather upon his retirement which bears his name inscribed in the band. My grandfather died in 1963, and my own father in 1999, but memories - and names - live on in me.
