Origin of the name Herbert:
Derived from the Old English Herebeorht (bright army), which is composed from the elements here (army) and beorht (bright, fair, white). The name was not used much, and at the time of the Conquest was replaced by the Normans with the continental Germanic cognates Hariberht and Heriberht, which are composed of the elements hari, heri (army) and beraht (bright, famous).
