One likely reason that Ivan is still popular in the "Spanish Southwest" while not in the rest of the country, is because older relatives with limited English can easily pronounce it in Spanish. Also, parents who want to honor a "Juan" in the family will sometimes use this cognate. Alan and Edgar also fall into this category.

The original, Russian pronunciation is more like, "Yvonne," a source of tension in some cases, if the name-holder is actually Russian.

This name has stronger ethnic/Russian connotations than almost any other, to the point of being used as an epithet during the Cold War. Having the name, even as a middle name, seems to automatically lead to a presumption of Russian ancestry, correctly or no.
