One likely reason that Ivan is still popular in the "Spanish Southwest" while not in the rest of the country, is because older relatives with limited English can easily pronounce it in Spanish. Also, parents who want to honor a "Juan" in the family will sometimes use this cognate. Alan and Edgar also fall into this category.
The original, Russian pronunciation is more like, "Yvonne," a source of tension in some cases, if the name-holder is actually Russian.
