The Japanese name Kaito may be written with different kanji characters which will change the inherent meaning. Some Japanese parents do not care about the meaning, and choose the kanji for the look of the characters. The "Kai" is most often the character for "ocean; sea." The "to" (pronounced like "toe" on your foot) is often the character for "Dipper" -- chosen for graphic preference rather than meaning -- or the character for "soar; fly" which has a nice look and meaning both. Another, less popular but meaningful choice for "to" is the character for "to cross, to span" such that the name means "to span the ocean."
