A generation or two back Nephi was not unusual for Latter-day Saint babies born in Utah, though more unusual elsewhere. Now it is more commonly given as a middle name if it is used, as it unmistakenly marks kids as "Utah Mormons" if they move elsewhere.

Meanings and history of the name Nephi: | Edit

Nephi is the second prophet in the Book of Mormon. He built a ship to take his family from the middle east (probably the eastern shore of Saudi Arabia) to the New World (some speculate Central America). He was the third of four sons of the prophet Lehi and is known as the "good son." Several of his descendants were also named Nephi, and the tribe of his descendants were called Nephites.
