Danish boy's name derived from 'Erasmus'. Rasmus has been a common name in Denmark since 1500-century. According to Statistics in Denmark there were 29457 people called Rasmussen of Denmark in first January 2010.

Rasmus and Asmus are both common in Holland. (History of Christian Names, Yonge, 1884). It derived from Greek. Saint Erasmus, also known as Saint Elmo, was a 4th-century martyr who is the patron saint of sailors. Erasmus was also the name of a Dutch scholar of the Renaissance period.

The name Rasmus has two different origins, one greek and one scandinavian. The greek origin is from Eros, the god of Love who is also adressed as Erasmus, the beloved. There had been several pre-christian viking kings with the name Rasmus. The scandinavian/viking Rasmus is a spirit of the sea who is something of a trickster and either benevolent or malevolent.
