The story of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer was created in 1939 by Robert L. May, and was turned into a song by Johnny Marks in 1948. Later, it became a very popular television special. The publicity generated by all three cemented the name Rudolph to the reindeer in the public consciousness, and effectively killed it off as a name for new babies.
