Transferred use of the English surname originating as an occupational name derived from the Old English stiward, stiweard (steward, keeper of the animal enclosure), a position that was in many caes a hereditary one, especially among noble or royal households. The name is borne by the Scottish royal family, said to be descended from a line of stewards from Brittany before the Conquest. The name was taken to Scotland by Mary, Queen of Scots, who was raised in France.
