Taran is one of the main characters in Lloyd Alexander's The Chronicles of Prydain (a series of children's books based on Gaelic mythology). He is an Assistant Pig Keeper, and later becomes the King of Prydain, fulfilling a prophecy made many years before he was born about a foundling child.
