Yoshio is a very common traditional Japanese name for boys. Japanese immigrants brought it to the USA (especially Hawaii and the West Coast) in the early years of the 20th century, which is why it is found among the top 1000 boys' names in America in the 1910's and 20's. Yoshio and its feminine form Yoshiko were among the most popular Japanese names of that era.
In Japan, Yoshio gradually fell out fashion after WWII, along with many other similar traditional male names (Toshio, Masao, Fumio) and their female equivalents (Yoshiko, Toshiko, Masako, Fumiko). Since the 1980's or so, such names have become very rare for children in Japan, and have an old-fashioned/dated image.
