This is my name. I like it a lot: good choice of nicknames, positive meaning ("defender of man"), and it's uncommon enough that I've only met one other person that shared it, and she was about 5. Downside: sometimes people mishear and think you said "Alexandra", which is still pretty but a bit less interesting I think, and also not my name :)

My daughter is named Alexandria and I think it is a beautiful and strong name. The only problem is that people are always saying it Alexandra, and then immediatly shortening it to Alex. Also, we call her Lexie so everyone assumes her name is Alexis.

Meanings and history of the name Alexandria: | Edit

Alexandria is derived from Alexander, specifically, Alexander the Great, a Macedonian prince who conquered a large part of the Middle East, Turkey, Egypt, and Pakistan around 300 BCE. He was well known for building new cities, often named Alexandria after himself. He crowned himself Pharoah (king) of Egypt, and after his early death at 32 from disease (speculation as to which), he was buried in Egypt. His general of the region, Ptolemy I, crowned himself Pharoah and began the Ptolemaic dynasty, which ended with the death of the famous Cleopatra Tryphaena VII, the last Queen of Egypt. There are also some U.S. cities named Alexandria, in 18 states, along with non-Middle Eastern cities in several countries, including Italy, Canada, Jamaica, Romania, Greece, South Africa, Scotland, 2 provinces in Canada and 3 provinces in Australia.
