In Latin, the passive periphrastic (a future participle), from which the name Amanda is a direct carry-over, almost always has a sense of necessity. The verb it is derived from is amo, meaning love. In this case, the participle is passive. Therefore, the name Amanda actually means something like "she who must be loved."

My little sister, Amanda, refuses to be called Mandy. She tells me I can't give her a nickname. But, shes allowed to give me a nickname of course...

-I grew up in the 80's when the name Amanda hit it's peak in popularity. There were always lots of other Amanda's at my school and sometimes more than one in my classes so we had to be called Amanda and our last initial. To be honest, I've always disliked my name. It's FAR too popular and people make up stupid little jokes for it like A-man-DUH and A man da hug and kiss. It's gets old. I think the french version of the name "Amandine" is much prettier and more unique.

My younger cousins name is Amanda Grace, she has 3 younger siblings. Jonathan Edward, Alyson Rose and Elizabeth Eleanor. Their ages are 9, 7, 5 and 4.

I really like my name. I love the meaning (worthy of love), and the way it sounds. The only thing I don't like about it is it's way too popular, and people always make refernces to "The Amanda Show" when they first meet me, which gets on my nerves.

I have a close friend named Amanda. I've known a lot of Amandas and in my experience, they are selfless, kind and caring people who are often very smart.

- I love my name! Unfortunately, like the person above me, I grew up in the time when "The Amanda Show" was really popular. I don't use the nicknames Mandy or Manda, but my family uses them anyway. My mom also sometimes calls me "Man."
