Comments and insights on the name Amy: | Edit

Amy is such a sweet and simple name. It's ready for a comeback! Works as a nickname for Amelia or Amanda, too.

Alternate spellings: Ami, Amie, Aimee

My name is Amanda and nobody has ever called me Amy. That is simply absurd to me.

Personal experiences with the name Amy: | Edit

My mother's name is Amy Janet, born in 1965. I've only known one 'Amy' my own age my whole life (I'm an '80s baby).

Hi! My name is Amelia (named after Amelia Earhart) but my mom has always called me Amy. I've tried to switch as an adult, with little success ;) I like both of my names. When I was taught to write my name it was AMY. In junior high I decided since it was short for Amelia it should be spelled AME, but no one could figure out how to pronounce that, so I went back to AMY and now only use Ame for special people. There was another Amy in my class and we used to be called Amy S and Amy A after the initials of our last names. We were both born in May of 1974. Her middle name is Ellen, and mine is Josephine. I really wanted to be called AJ but that never stuck ;) Some people still call me Amy Jo.

Meanings and history of the name Amy: | Edit

Amy is of Old French and Latin origin, and its meaning is "beloved".

Anglicised form of the Old French Aimee, meaning "beloved", which originated as a nickname from the Latin Amata, from "amare", meaning "to love".

Mythology: Amata was the wife of King Latinus, whose daughter Lavinia married Aeneas and according to the "Aeneid", became the mother of the Roman people.

Amelia Earhart was baptized Amelia (but always called Amy) after her mother Amelia "Amy" Otis Earhart (1869 – 1962).
