Andromeda was a princess from Greek mythology who, as divine punishment for her mother's bragging, was chained to a rock as a sacrifice to a sea monster. She was saved from death by Perseus, her future husband. Her name is the Latinized form of the Greek Ανδρομέδη (Andromédē). The etymology of the name is "to think of a man," from ανδρός (andros) "man" combined with μήδομαι (mēdomai) "to think, to be mindful of."

Andromeda is the name of the main character in Jodi Picoult's bestselling novel, My Sister's Keeper, that has
now been made into a movie. The character goes by Anna but her closet astronomer dad named her Andromeda.

Andromeda is also a minor character in the Harry Potter series by J.K.Rowling. She is the sister of Death Eaters Bellatrix Lestrange and Narcissa Malfoy, the wife of Ted Tonks, and mother to the Auror Nymphadora Tonks. She raises Tonks' son, Teddy, after Tonks and Lupin died in the final battle against Voldemort.
