It is frequently mispronouced, misspelled, and changed.
I have been called, Anita, Juanita, Bernadine, Bernadette, Bernadetta, Bertina, Bertine.
I suggest a simple one syllable middle name, the child may use later. If it is family name, use it. I get alot of positive responses that it sounds strong. I have strong leadership skills, so I think probably my name lends to the trust factor for many people who work with me.

Nicknames include: Bert(not my favorite), Nini (pronouced "neenee"), Bernie (also not my favorite), and Nita. My grandmother also called me Nina.

In my family it is pronounced Bernita (ber-net' uh). The original name means "harbinger (messenger) of victory" which is a very strong meaning.
