My name is Candice Raynette, named for my paternal Swedish grandmother Alice Candice. All my life, I was called "Candi" by friends and family and I would bet that some people close to me didn't even know my full name was Candice. I stayed with it all though my school years despite the expected joking and kidding that come with the name "Candi". I grew up to be an advertising/marketing executive (despite my dream to be a DJ) and when I joined an agency as the senior executive on the agency's most important account (Fortune 500), unbeknownst to me, prior to my first day at work, the agency CEO issued an edict by memorandum insisting that I be addressed by the staff at all times, both verbally and in writing as "Candice" and not "Candi". I met with a cold reception, and I had no idea why everyone seemed to already dislike me before I ever even met them. The art and copy department treated me in a particularly brutal manner. Only my assistant Mary was nice to me, so I asked her if she knew what was going on with everyone. "I think it was the memo," she whispered. I told her I didn't know about any memo and asked her to show me. Indeed, he'd written it and had not copied me on it. According to my angel Mary, he wrote it because "Candi' didn't sound professional unless I were a stripper, and that's why he made the demand. I concurred that "Candice" was more appropriate in an executive position, but wondered why he didn't share this with me. The terrible thing was this: Everybody who received the memo thought it had come through the CEO, but FROM ME! I rushed to explain and after that, my life was a lot easier around the agency.
