One of my name books says it is French, but I don't see how that is possible.

This was my mother's name, she was born in 1939. I named my daughter (1996) after her. I have encountered the name two other times. I don't know much about the origins, and I enjoy it being a rare name, but I'd like to see it come out of obscurity a little bit.

Obviously it means delight, as in happiness.

This is musician Quincy Jones' middle name.

Several songs use the phrase "sweet delight," but they probably mean the concept, not the name. However, apparently people started naming their girls "Afton" after mis-hearing "I laughed and she'd smile" as "Afton she'd smile" in Mandolin Rain by Bruce Hornsby, so you never know what will popularize a name!
