My name is Dominica. When I introduce myself I do find that I make sure to pronounce it very clearly. Usually people respond with "That's pretty." or "Are you Dominican?" The second one happens once out of every 5-6 people. In italian Domenica means Sunday. I was born on a Sunday, and the only reason my mom chose to spell it Dominica instead of Domenica is because she had the name already picked out with the e spelling, but shortly after met a person named Domenica and she was very negative and nasty. So my mom kept the name and changed the e to an i. Over the years I've grown to love my name. I love it now, as a child it was hard because everyone else around me had such ordinary names like Joe, Ashley etc. I like other kids wanted to fit in, and wanted to be called Olivia or Samantha for years. Now, as an adult and hearing people tell me they love my name, and being remembered for it I'm grateful. Also being in college I've met so many people from different places and backgrounds now my name is starting to sound ordinary!
