My grandmother's name is Eila. It is not pronounced "I-la;" it is pronounced "A-la." This is because it is a Finnish name and there are no dipthongs (blended vowels) in Finnish. Every vowel is pronounced. If you say it slowly enough, it should really be "EH-ih-la."
