Genevieve

Pronunciation: JEH-neh-veev (key)

Origin of the name Genevieve:

Derived from the Gaulish Genovefa, a name with Celtic roots but the meaning of which is uncertain. The first element is believed to be from genos (race, people, tribe); the second is possibly from an element meaning "woman." Its alteration in the translation from the Celtic to the French seems to be the cause of the confusion.

I would personally pronounce this name "Jahn-vee-ayv"

That is the French way, I believe. My daughter is Genevieve; I call her Genny and at work she is Gen.

My daughter is Genevieve, we call her Vivi.

Personal experiences with the name Genevieve: | Edit

Genevieve is one of those names that sounds like it would come across as pretentious, but I lived down the street from a little Genevieve for a year, and it sounded natural and fit her comfortably. If love this name but you're worried that it's too much - don't worry! It's gorgeous but not unmanageable.

This is my grandmothers name. I've always loved it. plus she had eight kids and none of them named their girls after her. So when i have my first daughter i plan to name her Genevieve Edith after my grandma with both names never knowing her middle name was Edith. and it's very pretty and very strong.
