Megan seems perpetually young - or at least youthful. Meg is a very dignified nickname for an older Megan.
I am a Megan, but the name has always felt too trendy to me. It doesn't feel substantive enough. I've always gone by Meg.
I quite like the name "Megan" but the abbreviation/nickname "Smeg" is dreadful.
Also, "Megan" spelled backwards is "Nag 'em".Megan is painfully difficult to pronounce for most non-English speakers. I'm a travel writer, and, though it seems simple, it's a behemoth of a name to carry around the world.
- Personal experiences with the name Megan: | Edit
My name is Megan and I was born in 1968. When I was in grade and high school nobody, I mean nobody, knew of my name. When I would have new teachers, I would often have to talk them through it. I always loved my name until the 80's and 90's (as one reader earlier mentioned) when I would hear parents yelling after their children while in public. It seemed there was a Megan everywhere! And then I would have parents insist that my name was spelled incorrectly and all those silly manifestations of Megan ie, Mheghan, Maygen, were actually the 'true' spellings. I am forty-one now and am awfully proud of my name.
I agree with the "youthful" analysis...but I think it is more because there are so few people over the age of 25 who are named Megan! After all, it only became a popular name in the 1980's!!! My name is Megan, and I always make a point to give my children names they can grow up with...something that sounds appropriate (or has an appropriate nickname) for a baby, a child, a teenager, AND an adult. Megan has the childhood parts covered, but just never sounded like a "grown-up's" name to me. Oh, and PLEASE stop saying it is pronounced "Mee-gan"! Megan is welsh, and is pronounced "May-ghen."
We named our daughter Megan and she is now 29 years old. She goes by Meg or Meggie from her friends. Her father and I call her Megan or Megs. I like Meggie. She has never complained about her name. She is a lovely, gorgeous woman! The only thing that she gets upset over is when people call her "Maygan" and she corrects them. "My name is pronounced "Megan" short e sound please!!

I disagree - having lived for many years on the Welsh border it is universally pronounced as "MEG-en", with a short E sound in both syllables. This is consistent between Welsh and English speakers. MEE-gen is the usual Australasian pronuncation, whilst MAY-gen is almost unknown outside the USA.
MY NAME IS MEGAN. I WAS BORN IN 1982. MY MOTHER LIKED THE NAME, SHE HERD IT ON A PLAYGROUND IN PASSING. TO REMEMBER MEGAN-SHE REMEMBERED "NUT-MEG"
I ALWAYS LIKED MY NAME, I FOUND IT TO BE SOMETHING NO ONE ELSE HAD. ALTHOUGH, AS I GREW, I FOUND THAT TO BE UN-TRUE. MEGAN'S EVERYWHERE. KIDS WOULD BE CRUEL AND CALL ME "MAGOT" AS A JOKE. I HAVE NEVER LIKED BEING NICK-NAMED "MEG" I PREFURE MEG'S. MEGGIE BETH, AND MEG-O- Nicknames for Megan: | Edit
