Comments and insights on the name Michiko: | Edit

Michiko is a common Japanese female name. It is also the name of the current Empress of Japan.

The name became hugely popular in Japan in the late 1950's when the then Crown Prince of Japan married Michiko Shoda, a beautiful commoner, in a surprising break with imperial tradition.

However, like most girl's names ending in the traditional -ko (meaning child), Michiko fell out of fashion by the 1980's, and is now quite rare for children in Japan.

The name is correctly pronounced with a light accent on the first syllable: MEE-chee-ko, *NOT* mit-CHEE-ko.
