A historical region and former province of northwest France on the English Channel. The name for this region comes from the Vikings ("Northmen" or "Norsemen") who settled this region.

During the Second World War, the Allies coordinated a massive build-up of troops and supplies to support a large-scale invasion of Normandy on D-Day, June 6, 1944. There were over 10,000 Allied casualties.
