Omie pronounced O me it was my grandfather's name as well as mine. I was led to believe it may have been from Cherokee origins but who knows. While this site seems to think it is a girls name I have never met a girl named Omie. Perhaps the spelling can be an english translation for 2 differrent names from other than english cultures. the one best known may have been largly female the other culture was Male but both languages may have a similar sound so they ended up being spelled the same when written in English.

My name is Omie, i have met one other girl called omie (it means something in indian?) My mum first herd the name from an old folk song about Omie Wise by Pentangle. I often get complements about my name and have never been told it sounds like a boys name. although people often assume its short for Naomi! I have also been told that in Irish it means sunshine.
