The name Paisley comes from a town in Scotland that made the Indian/Persian design we know today as "paisley" famous with shawls woven in their textile mills during the 1800s. Since this pattern had its roots in the cottage industries of Paisley Abbey, it is interesting to note the word "Paisley" itself is a Scottish derivation of the Greek word, "Basilica" meaning "church".

It's use as a girl's name has gained popularity beginning in 2006 and moving upward on the top 1000 name list.

Contrary to what Baby Name Wizard says on its NameMapper, Paisley is in the top 100 in Utah (#87 in 2008), and perhaps other states, but their info only goes through 2007.
