Pilar means pillar, yes, a column. It sounds really beautiful in spanish.
The name comes from the Virgin Mary and Saint James. At some point when the Saint was in Spain he lost his faith and stopped preaching. Virgin Mary (when she was still alive!) appeard on the top a pillar and gave him faith and strenght to continue. All this happend in Zaragoza, Spain, at the bank of the Ebro river.
